miR-122-regulated metabolic circuits: micro-management of lipid metabolism in the human liver
Abstract
The liver plays a key role in protein, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Alteration of liver metabolic functions, e.g., by excessive alcohol intake, obesity, diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia can lead to accumulation of triglycerides (TG) in the liver, referred to as fatty liver or hepatic steatosis.
